Since, Mane’s transfer to Bayern Munich neared, Liverpool began to compile a list of potential replacements. In May, reports emerged linking The Reds to Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung Min as a potential successor for Mane.

Recent reports have provided details regarding how close Liverpool came to securing the South Korean superstar. According to The Telegraph, The Reds were actively exploring the possibility. Since, they were aware of Son’s potential departure from his current club.

Son reveals that he wanted to join Liverpool

Furthermore, reports suggest that Son had a genuine interest in joining The Reds. However, Tottenham secured a place in the Champions League, leading to Son ultimately signing a new contract with the North London club.

Following their failed pursuit of Son, Liverpool successfully recruited Darwin Nunez from Benfica during the summer. And they also acquired Dutchman Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in January. Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, has previously admitted that not signing Son was one of his significant regrets.

Liverpool manager said: “One of the biggest mistakes in my life is not signing Son Heung-min. Outstanding player. He is fantastic, a sign of Korean football and one of the best strikers in the world.”

Hence, Son ended up joining Leverkusen due to Dortmund’s rotation system and later on Tottenham.
