Lothar Matthäus speaks about the end of reign of Marco Reus in Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund

According to Lothar Matthäus, Marco Reus is no longer an untouchable player at Borussia Dortmund. Thus, implying that it would be in the best interest of both parties to part ways.

The contract situation of Marco Reus at Borussia Dortmund is still up in the air. With his current deal set to expire at the end of the season. BILD reported that the Dortmund captain is set to sign a new one-year contract. However, his agent has dismissed those claims and stated that no agreement has been reached yet. However, talks between the two parties are ongoing.

Lothar Matthäus, the former captain of Germany, believes that Marco Reus could be leaving Borussia Dortmund soon, implying that it would be the best outcome for all concerned. Reus joined Borussia Dortmund in 2012 from Borussia Mönchengladbach. He has been closely linked with a move away from the club this summer, with his current contract due to expire at the end of the season.

What did Lothar Matthäus say about Marco Reus?

Lothar Matthäus has suggested during an appearance on Sky90 that Borussia Dortmund already have players who can step up and replace Marco Reus in the side. Thus, indicating that his time at the club could come to an end this summer.

“Reus isn’t getting any better, the injuries will continue and he’s getting older. If they no longer trust Marco Reus one hundred percent, then they should find a sensible solution that is good for both sides. Already, Reus is no longer an untouchable regular player as captain.”

“I see people at Borussia Dortmund who can play in Reus’ position. Julian Brandt stepped up when Reus was injured. On top of that, they have Karim Adeyemi. They have great players in attack who can certainly replace Reus.”

On the other hand, Marco Reus expressed his desire to stay at Borussia Dortmund until the end of his playing career. But it is possible that he may have to accept a pay cut to do so. However, it is still likely that he will sign a one-year contract extension by the end of the season.

Despite Marco Reus’ recent struggles, the Borussia Dortmund captain managed to score eight goals and provide seven assists in 25 appearances across all competitions this season.
