Manchester United may swap Varane with Thomas Muller of Bayern

Raphael Varane - Manchester United

In the upcoming January transfer window, Manchester United may explore the possibility of a swap deal with Bayern Munich. Reports suggest that Bayern is keen on acquiring Raphael Varane. Meanwhile, rumors say Thomas Muller has a link with a potential move to Manchester United.

Varane has faced a decline in favor at United during this season. Despite Lisandro Martinez’s absence due to a foot injury, the Frenchman hasn’t been in the starting lineup for a Premier League match since September. Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, and Victor Lindelof are all in favour over Varane in the pecking order. Thus, leading to frustration on the part of the former Real Madrid star due to his limited game time.

According to reports from Sky Sport Germany last week, Manchester United would be open to selling Varane. That is in the January transfer window at the right price. The Red Devils are reportedly seeking a fee ranging between £17.4 million and £26 million for the former World Cup winner.

Bayern Munich is showing interest in bringing Varane to the Allianz Arena. But concerns about the cost of his wages and transfer fee may prompt them to explore a swap deal to mitigate expenses. Reports from German outlet Bild suggest that Manchester United could target Thomas Muller. That is if he continues to face challenges in securing regular playing time under Thomas Tuchel. Muller, who has spent his entire career at Bayern, is set to become a free agent at the end of the current season.

Will this move be beneficial to Varane and Muller as well as their clubs?

The 34-year-old Muller has only been in the starting lineup for four Bundesliga matches this season. Accumulating 329 minutes of play in his 10 total appearances. Despite his reduced playing time, he remains determined to continue performing at the highest level. Even if it means not staying with Bayern. Manchester United, grappling with scoring challenges among their attackers in the Premier League, could benefit from Muller’s experience in the final third. Throughout his career at Bayern, he has scored 237 goals. But his playing time has become limited since the arrival of Harry Kane.

A swap deal involving Muller and Varane could potentially be a mutually beneficial arrangement for all parties involved. Reports from FCB Inside suggest that Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Manchester United, is likely to pursue a move for Varane in the January transfer window to bolster his defensive options.

The financial aspects of the deal could pose a challenge. Varane currently earns £340,000 per week at United, amounting to almost £17.7 million over a 12-month period. Muller, being one of the higher earners at Bayern, the removal of his salary from the wage bill would potentially create room for Tuchel to make a new signing. Muller will have an opportunity to assess his potential new surroundings. That is when Bayern faces Manchester United in the upcoming Champions League match in just over two weeks.
