Even though the transfer window has slammed shut, Manchester United are already plotting to bring in their next big target. The club is now aiming to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in the next summer.
And how is Manchester United trying to lure Haaland? Well, the club will now try and use Cristiano Ronaldo to attract the Norwegian to their club.
Erling Haaland is the subject of interest of all the top clubs in Europe. The player will have his release clause of €75 million activated in the next summer. Thus Manchester United considers that the prospect of working with Ronaldo can help convince Haaland to come to Old Trafford.
RONALDO TO HELP UNITED IN HAALAND PURSUIT
Manchester United had an excellent summer transfer window. The club finally completed the signature of Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho. This was followed by a swift capture of French defender Rafael Varane. And in the last week of the window, the club shocked the world by bringing back former star Cristiano Ronaldo.
While the window was successful, there was criticism from some corners especially with the inability to sign a defensive midfield. Also, the current centre-forward options for the club include veterans Ronaldo and Edison Cavani and a very inconsistent Anthony Martial. Some suggest that acquiring Ronaldo, have shut the possibility of the club signing a new centre-forward like Haaland.
However, reports from ESPN suggest the contrary. Haaland considers Ronaldo as a role model and it is believed that United will not have any financial issues in signing the player. The Norwegian was on top of the list of priorities for the Red Devils a few years back, but the player decided to join Dortmund instead. Haaland’s former teammate Sancho could also help in convincing him. And manager Ole Gunnar Solsklaer is also in a good relationship with Haaland, increasing the possibility of signing him next season.
HAALAND TO CAUSE A TRANSFER WAR
Haaland is a world-class talent and at 21, has a long career ahead of him. He is already scoring at a ridiculous pace, and with his new release clause to start from 2022, clubs are waiting to open their cheque books for him.
Manchester City, who have failed in their pursuit for Harry Kane, will shift their attention to Haaland, whose father played for the Citizens. Similarly, there are rumours that Liverpool are planning for a shock move for the striker next summer.
Bayern Munich are also monitoring the player and considers him as the ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski. PSG also wants to make a statement and will look to replace Kylian Mbappe with Haaland, as the Frenchman is mostly going to be moving to Real Madrid.
Madrid themselves could enter the market and make a huge statement by completing the capture of Haaland and Mbappe in the same window. Thus it is sure that United will face tough competition from across Europe. Only time will tell if Ronaldo can help in convincing the Norwegian to sign for United.
