Player Profile: Asheer Akhtar, the wall of defense for the Highlanders

Asheer Akhtar has joined North East United FC on a two-year deal. The Nagpur-born right back, who can also play as a centre-back, joins the Indian Super League side from Sreenidi Deccan FC.

Career Highlights:

The 28-year-old versatile right back started his youth career at Rabbani Club and Pune FC. Later in 2015-16, Asheer Akhtar started his professional career with Lonestar Kashmir FC, where he played eight games. He also played for the clubs like Mumbai FC and Bengaluru FC.

In 2018, Asheer joined Bengaluru II and played 15 games for them. Later in 2019, the defender signed for East Bengal FC and played 11 I-League games for them.

In 2020, Asheer joined Mohammedan SC on a loan deal from East Bengal FC. Later in 2021, the defender joined Mohammedan SC on a free transfer. In his stint with the Black Panthers, he played a total of 28 games and scored two goals.

Recently, Asheer was playing at Sreenidi Deccan. He played a total of 21 games for them and scored three goals.

After his impressive stint with Sreenidi Deccan, Asheer has now got a chance to showcase his ability on the platform of Hero ISL. He rejoins his former teammates, Phalguni Singh and Dinesh Singh, at his new club. Asheer, who will be a Highlanders until 2025, is going to play a huge role in the upcoming season.

On joining the Highlanders, the versatile defender said,

“It’s an absolute honor for me to join NorthEast United FC. It is a unique club as it doesn’t represent a single city or state. They have an incredible fanbase, and I’m thrilled to be a part of such a club. I’m ready to face the challenges of the upcoming season, and together with the team we can overcome them.”

On Asheer’s addition, NorthEast United FC’s head coach Juan Pedro Benali said,

“Asheer’s versatility adds depth to our defensive options. He has plenty of experience and is someone who seldom makes mistakes. He has featured regularly for his former sides in the recent past and is the right player to strengthen our defense.”
