NorthEast United FC was established in 2014 by John Abraham, an Indian actor, and producer, in partnership with Shillong Lajong FC. The team’s inaugural season was less successful as they finished 8th in the league standings. The club’s best finish in the league came in the 2018-19 season when they reached the playoffs for the first time. However, they lost in the semi-finals.
