Real Madrid to compete with Barcelona for Juan Foyth

Barcelona’s long-standing search for a right-back is present widely in the reports. The club is yet to find a long-term solution to their defensive issues. While Jules Kounde has been filling in the position capably, it appears that Real Madrid may also be in the market for a right-sided defender.Villarreal defender Juan Foyth is a potential candidate to replace Jules Kounde at Barcelona.

Foyth’s skill set as a solid defender and good ball-player, having played in midfield before. This make him an attractive option for the position. However, the stumbling block is his release clause, which is reportedly €54m according to Sport. Villarreal is unwilling to negotiate, which poses a challenge for Barcelona, who are struggling financially.

Real Madrid could be more willing to spend on a right-back as they face growing concerns over Dani Carvajal’s form and consistency, compounded by his injury and fitness issues over several seasons. Although Carvajal is still among the best when he is at the top of his game, such performances have become increasingly rare.

Lucas Vazquez has been used as a backup option but he is also 31 years old. Addressing the right-back position would thus be a top priority for Los Blancos if they decide to invest in their defence. The club has younger options in Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia. Also David Alaba is able to play in that position as well.

Is Juan Foyth the correct choice for Real Madrid?

It is important for Real Madrid to consider their plans for the left-back position before making a decision on the right-back spot. If Fran Garcia is the preferred option for the left, then bringing in a defensively solid full-back like Juan Foyth would help to shore up the defense.

However, if Ferland Mendy is ready to continue on the left, pairing him with Foyth would make the team less dynamic with the ball. Although both players are excellent one-on-one defenders, Foyth is better in the air and on the ball. This combination might be as having similar profiles when it comes to attacking play.

It is worth noting that neither Foyth nor Pavard are known for their ability to provide crosses from the by-line. This was once a key aspect of Carvajal’s game. Players like Vinicius Junior and Fede Valverde operating in central areas. At least one of Real Madrid’s full-backs should be capable of providing width and stretching the game.

While Foyth is a solid defender, he may not be the most logical solution to Real Madrid’s right-back issues if Mendy continues on the left. Real Madrid were previously linked with Pavard when Barcelona were also interested. But if the Frenchman were to become available, Real Madrid could be a more realistic option. Even if he may not be the most suitable fit for their style of play.
