United legend Scholes wants Ten Hag to purchase Lautaro Martinez

Lautaro Martinez

According to Paul Scholes, Manchester United should sign Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez instead of Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen. Scholes is concerned that a prolonged transfer saga involving Kane could leave United empty-handed. Therefore, Martinez would be a better option for the club.

Scholes said while talking to BT Sport before United’s clash against Real Betis:

“I don’t think Kane will move from Tottenham at this point, I think it’s tricky business dealing with Daniel Levy, he could string you on right to the very last minute of the transfer window and leave you with nothing.”

Scholes’ suggestion could be valid, considering Tottenham’s current firm stance that they will not let Kane leave this summer. Although Kane will have just one year left on his contract in June. Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy may believe that he can convince him to stay beyond that.

Scholes does not believe that Victor Osimhen would be a good fit for Manchester United. He suggests that the Nigerian may be better suited to another club. He said:

“I think there are other players out there, like Osimhen. I haven’t seen loads of him, but I see him as more of a [Didier] Drogba type, possibly more of a Chelsea-type centre-forward. Is he going to get those kind of crosses at United? That’s the thing.”

When asked about who Manchester United should sign, Scholes chose Lautaro Martinez, which may come as a surprise to some. He added:

“I like Lautaro Martinez at Inter Milan. I think he’s Ten Hag’s type of player. He likes a centre-forward who will run about, be aggressive, get against people. There are options. I like Manchester United’s centre-forwards as they are. I like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. We all know the quality they’ve got. There are options out there and let’s hope we can bring one in.”

Lautaro Martinez is not known for his aerial ability, and his height of just 5’9″ means he may struggle to be a target for crosses. This could make him an odd fit for a team that does not rely heavily on crossing, as it could limit his impact in the attacking phase. However, it is also possible that Ten Hag may look to adjust United’s tactics to better suit Martinez’s style of play, as he has the ability to make runs in behind and score goals with his impressive finishing skills. Ultimately, it will depend on whether United’s coaching staff believes Martinez’s qualities can be maximized within their system.
