La Liga to investigate Messi for violating COVID-19 protocols

La Liga is reportedly set to investigate Lionel Messi about gathering a large crowd amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The Barcelona skipper called for a ‘barbecue gathering’ inviting his teammates and their partners.

The Catalans are due to face current league leaders Atletico Madrid on Saturday and this gathering could be a big issue. There is a rule considering COVID-19 protocols that allow only up to six people can gather inside or outside in Catalonia.

However, it has been observed that the players followed proper social distancing. But, the League and local health authorities need more clarity and information about the gathering.

According to reports, the players were chanting ‘Campeones’ as they were in the belief of defeating Atletico. The Spanish league along with health officials would be looking to gather more information about the party as per ESPN.

The Blaugrana players didn’t pay heed to the precautions. They thought that it won’t make any difference as the players are in the same bio bubble. Earlier, the same issue occurred with another Spanish club, Sevilla, before the start of the season. However, the players apologized, and the issue was resolved.

“At a time when we’re taking steps forward to relax the restrictions, we must behave in an exemplary way, especially those with public profiles, who are an example for many people.” – Pere Aragones.

The meeting could be a risky decision for the 34-year-old Argentine as his future at the Catalan club is still uncertain. He had faced earlier many problems regarding the La Liga and this could be another issue.

A win against the Rojiblancos won’t guarantee them the league as Real Madrid are above them due to superior head-to-head record. However, they have more time to concentrate as compared to their arch-rivals. The Galacticos are also facing pressure in the Champions League as they travel to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea.
