As a result of investing heavily in new recruits, Barcelona has restructured their defence this season. Many of the same players appear set to return next season. In the past two seasons, Barcelona has signed four centre backs, with Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, and Eric Garcia joining them. Last summer, Ronald Araujo also signed a new contract.
Despite uncertainty at right-back, Jordi Alba, Alejandro Balde, and Marcos Alonso have been competing for minutes on the left.
Balde and Alonso are reportedly ready to receive a new contract, meanwhile, Alba has a contract until 2024. The former Chelsea defender Alonso arrived on a free transfer last summer. Xavi Hernandez seems to be in favor of a renewal of the player.
Possibility of Alonso getting a contract renewal for Barcelona
It remains to be seen whether the renewal of Alonso will be for a single season or for two. Xavi seems to appreciate his role as a leader in the dressing room despite rarely being selected as a starter these days. He values Alonso’s experience as a mentor for the younger players.
Recent seasons have seen Alonso play off the bench as a game-finisher. In addition to his aerial ability, Xavi often uses him as a central defender.
Barcelona currently are on fine form and sits at the top of the league with 44 points for their name. Real Madrid is slightly trailing them by 3 points at the second of the table. It will surely be a tough fight between the two teams to get to the La Liga title by the season’s end.
