Barcelona interested in signing Leicester’s Nigerian midfielder

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Barcelona are seemed to be impressed in Leicester’ combative midfielder Wilfred Ndidi. According to El Gol Digital, Wilfred Ndidi is the subject of interest for Barcelona over a possible transfer.

The Catalan giants have identified the Leicester City midfield powerhouse as a potential replacement for Sergio Busquets in the team. The 32-year-old is slowly losing his pace and is getting “too slow” for the modern game.

It is believed that Ndidi is an alternative for N’Golo Kante. Barcelona have been after Kante for some time now. However, it seems the transfer could not be pursued because of Chelsea’ high demands.

Ndidi’ Life at Leicester

Ndidi joined Leicester City from Genk in January 2017 and has since come leaps and bounds to establish himself as one of the best midfielders on show in the Premier League.

He soon became a first-team name for his manager after Kante left the club for Chelsea. His performances as a defensive midfielder have helped his club a lot this season as the Foxes currently sit top three. They have more or less saved a Champions League spot for themselves.

Ndidi has gone to appear more than 171 times for the former Premier League Champions. He has chipped in with 9 goals and 10 assists from a defensive role.

His performances has attracted some big European clubs to sign him. He was briefly linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United as they want to sign the midfielder. With these clubs linked Barcelona might face a strong competition signing Ndidi.

Ndidi ideal as Busquets replacement at Barcelona

Barcelona is currently in the market for signing a forward next season. However, they may be also looking for a midfielder next season as their first choice midfielder, Sergio Busquets, has entered the final phase of his career.

It is believed that Barcelona had shortlisted Georginio Wijnaldum and Adrien Rabiot earlier. However, the recent reports claim that Ndidi might be the successor of Busquets.

Ndidi is creative and has an excellent vision. His passing is extraordinary and his technique is superb. He also has great defensive skills which would be a bonus for the team at the backline, as it would make the team strong defensively.

It is no doubt that a midfielder of Ndidi’s quality will undoubtedly be the right choice for Ronald Koeman if he is confident that he can get the best out of him.

For now, it looks like a move for Ndidi might be put on the back-burner, which is not surprising considering Busquets’ exploits this season. However, it remains to be seen if Barcelona do make a move for a holding midfielder this summer.
