Burnley are want to sign Lyon’s Maxwell Cornet

Burnley have approached the French side Olympique Lyonnais for the signing of Maxwell Cornet.

Leeds United were heavily linked with the 24-year-old. However, those links have cooled after they signed Junior Firpo from Barcelona.

L’Equipe reported that Burnley have inquired about Cornet and are on par with his €13,000,000 price tag. They are ready to match the fee and put forth an offer for the Wideman. His acquisition would contribute to improving Sean Dyche’s defensive options.

Cornet faces competition from Charlie Taylor and Erik Pieters for a spot in the starting XI.

However, Burnley’s desire to sign the Ivorian could be hampered by German interest. Hertha Berlin are another such club monitoring Cornet’s situation. They are preparing to place a bid and have sufficient funds to meet Lyon’s valuation, thanks to investor Lars Windhorst.

Cornet came through the youth team ranks at Metz before making the move to Lyon in 2015. Operating mainly at left-back, Cornet is able to play further up the pitch as well.

He has made more than 250 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, scoring 51 goals in that time. The 24-year-old featured in 36 games last season, scoring twice.

Since 2017, Cornet has been linked with multiple Bundesliga clubs. A different one seems to pop up nearly every transfer window. Previously, the fullback himself rebuffed the notion of moving to Germany.

Nonetheless, Cornet is reportedly leaning towards a Bundesliga move as Hertha aim for a top-ten finish.
