Chelsea gives updates on their squad ahead of EFL Cup fixture

Graham Potter

Chelsea released its most recent injury update in anticipation of their return to EFL Cup action tomorrow night. The customary update on the club’s website reveals that winger Noni Madueke resumed full team training. That is after a period of unavailability due to injury in recent weeks.

The ongoing season has posed significant challenges for Madueke. Hence, he found it tough to secure regular playing time at Stamford Bridge.

Since his £30 million move back in January, Madueke’s time at Chelsea has been characterized by infrequent appearances. Typically coming off the bench. Injuries and various other factors have restricted him to just one league start and a total of three minutes since October started.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with certain off-field behavior earlier in the campaign. Thus, leading to the Englishman being on the bench despite being uninjured.

He reportedly transformed into a model trainer after this incident. However, the positive change has not translated into an increase in playing time on the pitch so far.

Chelsea hungry in search of silverware

The next day presents a favorable opportunity for Madueke, given the mounting fixtures and potential consideration for rotation. The EFL Cup currently stands as Chelsea’s best chance at securing silverware this season, with Mauricio Pochettino evidently keen on adding another trophy to the club’s glorious cabinet.

Hence, there’s a possibility that Chelsea aims to field the strongest possible team for the encounter with Newcastle United, seeking a chance for redemption after their recent defeat in the league. The team suffered a significant loss at St. James’ Park. With Reece James being sent off just before encountering an injury that will keep him sidelined for an extended period.
