Chelsea on the lookout for new defender and striker in the winter window

Graham Potter

Chelsea has been initiating contact with Sporting regarding a potential deal for defender Ousmane Diomande. Since, they consider reinforcing their center-back options in the January transfer window. The 20-year-old Diomande is a prime target for Chelsea. With internal discussions also revolving around potential striker options.

Sporting has rejected Chelsea initial inquiry for Diomande. Thus, asserting that they will only entertain a transfer if the full £69 million (€80 million) release clause is met.

Ousmane Diomande has been a consistent presence for Sporting since joining from FC Midtjylland in January, playing a crucial role in their position at the top of the Portuguese table.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Sporting owes Midtjylland 20 percent of any profit from a future transfer. Thus, adding an additional layer of complexity to negotiations and attempts to lower the fee.

Why are Chelsea desperate for a new defender?

Despite already having a roster that includes Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, and Thiago Silva, Chelsea is actively seeking to acquire another young central defender.

Wesley Fofana is currently in the sidelines with a long-term knee injury. Trevoh Chalobah is reportedly available for sale in the upcoming January transfer window to contribute to funds for new acquisitions. Additionally, Thiago Silva might potentially depart when his contract expires next summer.

Chelsea are also on the lookout for a potential deal for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres. The former Brighton and Coventry City target man has had an impressive start to his first season at Sporting. Notching up 17 goals and eight assists in 20 matches.
