Chelsea young talent Alex Matos impressing everyone since his debut

Graham Potter

Former Norwich City prospect Alex Matos has left a notable impression at Chelsea. Hence, he is now part of Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team squad following his move to the club in the summer.

Matos departed Norwich on a free transfer, having declined a contract extension due to dissatisfaction with limited first-team opportunities. The teenager opted to join Chelsea over offers from Newcastle and Southampton.

As Matos had been part of Norwich since the age of 11, the club will be getting compensation. Norwich has included a 20% future sell-on clause in the deal, ensuring they would benefit if Matos is transferred in the future.

Even though Matos was initially an addition to Chelsea as an academy player, the 19-year-old has become a consistent presence in their matchday squads. However, he has only made one appearance this season.

Chelsea will like to rely on Matos in the upcoming future

Former City youth chief Gregg Broughton has expressed admiration for Matos’s early progress at Stamford Bridge. Thus, acknowledging the challenge of joining one of the premier youth setups despite his commendable performance.

Broughton said: “Chelsea have probably the best academy in the UK, even Europe. Alex has gone in there and jumped ahead of a lot of very, very good young players.”

Pochettino has been pleased with Matos’s dedication since his move to West London, leading to his regular participation in first-team training sessions. Matos was a vital target for Chelsea during his time at Norwich. He is undoubtedly showcasing his worth at Stamford Bridge.
