Gerard Romero says that Barcelona purchased a new La Liga centre-back

Julian Araujo

According to a report from Gerard Romero, Barcelona reportedly signed Inigo Martinez from Athletic Club. The centre-back reached a full pre-agreement with Barca. Expectations are he will join the Catalans on a free transfer once his contract expires.

The report also says, Inigo Martinez passed the medical examination for Barcelona a few days ago. He agreed on all the necessary details in his contract, which indicates that the transfer deal is almost complete.

While Inigo Martinez signed a pre-agreement with Barcelona and passed his medical, there is uncertainty regarding his registration with the club. The Catalans needs to significantly reduce their wage bill that is more than €200 million in the upcoming summer transfer window. Thus, they are unsure about making any new signings.

Why are Barcelona desperate for backup defenders like Ingio Martinez?

The reports further state that Inigo Martinez’s contract with Barcelona includes a clause. It stipulates that he will be loaned out to another team in case Barcelona is unable to register him due to their financial situation. However, his salary will reportedly remain unchanged.

However, the signing of Inigo Martinez has been on the radar of the Catalans for a few months now. With the club attempting to complete the deal in the previous transfer windows as well.

Barcelona are desperate for backup defenders in need of any emergency. Their lack of proper defenders during the crucial stage of UCL costed them severely. Hence, they will love to have proper reserves in case Araujo, Christensen and Kounde suffer injury.
