Gokulam Kerala on track to sign Shahajas Thekkan

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

I-League team Gokulam Kerala are on the verge of signing full-back Shahajas Thekkan. The footballer from Kerala played for Indian Super League (ISL) side Kerala Blasters until recently. However, by mutual consent, he parted ways with the club in the last week of September.

Sources were quoted saying, Gokulam Kerala will sign Shahajas Thekkan ahead of the new season. The player has already agreed to terms on a two-year contract with them. If all goes per plan, he will feature in I-League 2021-22 for the Malabarians,”.

The 22-year-old was part of the Kerala Blasters squad that won the Kerala Premier League(KPL). The former Kerala Blasters Reserves team captain made the Yellow Army’s pre-season squad too.

Gokulam Kerala to land a bargain in Thhekan

Shahajas signed for Kerala Blasters in 2017. Instantly, into the reserves team, the full-back went. He went on to make a handful of appearances in the Second Division League.

Good performances in the 2020-21 Kerala Premier League, combined with his consistency over the years earned him a spot in the Kerala Blasters pre-season squad. However, the defender saw limited playing-time despite the club playing a few friendlies and participating in the Durand Cup. This gave reason to explain his contract termination with them.

The Malabarians were also part of the Durand Cup 2021. From Group D, they qualified for the knockout stages alongside Assam Rifles, Army Red and Hyderabad FC. Unfortunately, Mohammedan SC eliminated them with a 1-0 defeat in the quarter-finals.

That may have brought an end to the defending champions’ campaign. But their season is not yet over as they look to defend their I-League title from last season.

With coach Vincenzo Alberto Annese leading the charge, Gokulam Kerala have already brought in a host of new signings. Elvis Chikatara, Rahim Osumanu and Aminou Bouba complete their foreign division beside captain Sharif Mukhammad. Domestic recruits include Deepak Singh, Rakshit Dagar, Muhammed Uvais, Krishnananda Singh among others.
