Fernando Roig, the president of Villarreal CF has shed light on his opinion about the growth of football in India. Even though India is the second most populated country, they have always failed to compete in football.
The arrival of the Indian Super League in a way has started the revolution for football in India. It has led to an exponential growth of football in India. India has been announced as the host for two major tournaments – the AFC Women’s Asia Cup and FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2022. The Indian Super League has also succeeded in attracting some huge names from the European football circuit.
Roig has called India out for its potential and expects India to become a massive footballing nation in the future.“India has huge potential. The country is really developing at a spectacular pace with some very good players coming through. I’m sure if we can develop football (in India), it won’t be just good in footballing terms, but for India as a whole. So, for those of us who can invest in football in India, it will result in collective good,”
Villarreal CF pipped Manchester United to win the Europa League last season and have established themselves as one of the stable sides in La Liga. Fernando Roig has been at the center of it all since he took over his position. Should Roig decide to invest in India, the project will be one to look out for given his charisma for football is at a good level, which is something that India definitely requires.
