Juventus turn down an approach from Chelsea and Barcelona for their star defender

Juventus have reportedly rejected the attempt from Chelsea and Barcelona to take away the young Dutch defender Matthijs De Ligt from the Allianz Stadium.

De Ligt has become the first team defender for the Bianconeri in recent months ahead of veterans Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci. The defender made 24 appearances in Serie A this season, scoring one goal and an assist.

The Old Lady of Turin bought the 21-year-old highly-rated defender in the summer of 2019 for €85.5 million. Currently, he has a contract with Bianconeri until June 2024. However, this deal hasn’t been as successful as it was expected, though De Ligt is doing well and he has plenty of time to improve.

It won’t be an easy task for Chelsea or Barcelona to buy the Netherlands International from Juventus as they will have to pay around €100 million for the defender and on top of that a huge agent fee for super-agent Mino Riola during this pandemic.

Will Juventus sell De Ligt to Chelsea or Barcelona?

According to Tuttosport, Chelsea and Barcelona have knocked on the door of Juventus for the signature of Matthijs De Ligt in the summer. However, on both occasions, the Bianconeri have rejected any offers from them.

The Blaugrana tried to sign Frankie De Jong and Matthijs De Ligt following their great performances in the Champions League in the 2018-2019 season. However, they only secured the signature of De Jong and missed out on De Ligt to Juventus.

Chelsea are willing to solidify their defense and trying to find a replacement for Thiago Silva who won’t be there for long. However, after spending over £200 million last summer it is hard to believe that they can go anywhere near this deal.

De Ligt joined the Ajax youth academy when he was 9 years old from his local club in Abcoude, just outside of Amsterdam. In September, he made his debut for Ajax’s senior team in a cup game against Willem II. The defender scored from a corner after 25 minutes, making him the second-youngest goalscorer ever behind Clarence Seedorf.

In March 2017, De Ligt made his debut for the Dutch national team in a 2–0 away defeat to Bulgaria in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification match. Since then he has appeared in 26 games for the Netherlands and scored twice.
