Leverkusen join race for Liverpool’s Nathaniel Phillips

Bundesliga’s Bayer Leverkusen have emerged as contenders to sign Nathaniel Phillips from Liverpool. Sky Sports claim that the German side are looking to beef up their defence.

Virgil Van Dijk’s season-long injury handed a golden opportunity to Phillips. The 24-year-old was quick to capitalize on the chance. The Bolton-born defender featured 20 times and put up impressive displays.

With Van Dijk and Joe Gomez fit again, Phillips could see fewer minutes. The arrival of Ibrahima Konate pushes him further down the ranking.

At 24, Phillips wants to play first-team football. After starting for Liverpool regularly, that will be his immediate goal.

In 20 appearances, Phillips scored once and assisted once in the 2020/21 campaign.

Reports claim that the defender would be available for around £15-million. Brighton, Burnley, Newcastle and West Ham are all looking to land the 24-year-old. Leverkusen too are on the hunt for Phillips.

Leverkusen would certainly be an attractive option. The club will be in the Europa League next season and Phillips played Champions League football last season.

It would also allow him the chance to head to a country he is familiar with. He played 22 times for VfB Stuttgart during 2019/20, helping them gain promotion back to the Bundesliga.
