Lionel Messi donned the iconic number 10 jersey for PSG in their round of 16 match against OGC Nice. PSG overcame Feignies Aunloye and Vannes to reach the last 16 of the competition in a comfortable fashion. However, their campaign of defending their French Cup title was cut short after a surprise loss to OGC Nice in the round of 16. The favorites crashed out after a loss in the penalty shoot-out.

Why Messi wore the number 10 jersey for PSG

Lionel Messi donned the number 10 jersey for PSG yesterday for the first time. It is a well-known fact that Neymar is number 10 for PSG. Meanwhile, Messi has been given jersey number 30 after his transfer from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint Germain in the summer.

However, Messi wore the number 10 jersey last night in accordance with some traditional rules followed by the board of the French Cup. The 11 players in the lineup are supposed to take a jersey number between 1-11 with the goalkeeper donning the number 1 jersey.

The defenders occupied the numbers from 2-5 and the midfielders from 6-8. Messi followed the order by wearing his favored number 10 jersey. Seeing Messi wear the iconic No. 10 on his back, many of his fans got nostalgic, recalling the good old Barcelona days. However, it was another disappointing day for Messi in the PSG jersey, as he failed to make an impact.

Kylian Mbappe was also brought on in the second half to make an impact. The match ended 0-0 after regulation time. OGC Nice then won the decisive penalty shootouts 6-5 after Xavi Simmons missed the final penalty in sudden death. It was another disappointment for PSG under Pochettino’s tenure after failing to win Ligue 1 last season.
