A deal has been reached for Memphis Depay to join Atletico Madrid from FC Barcelona. Aside from Robert Lewandowski, Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres are on the left flank. However, the Dutch international is currently out of Xavi Hernandez’s first XI.
A day after Barcelona beat Atleti 1-0 at the Metropolitano to go three points clear in La Liga, Depay’s name began to be linked to Diego Simeone’s side. A temporary departure was on the line because of Joao Felix, who signed a loan deal with Chelsea for €11million.
Fabrizio Romano and Manu Carreno of Cadena SER were among the first to report that Atleti had approached Barca about Depay.
Clubs interested in Memphis Depay
SPORT reports that Depay has given his approval to the move, with both clubs aware that he is ready to change clubs. According to reports, Depay’s deal would be a two-and-a-half-year contract rather than a loan deal like Felix’s.
A second Premier League offer is also on the table for Depay from Newcastle United. Nevertheless, he is most interested in Simeone’s project in Atletico Madrid. Since Laporta and his board paid nothing for Depay, releasing him for cash would be a success.
The Dutchman was an immediate starter for the Blaugrana first XI under Ronald Koeman. Still, he played a major role even under Xavi Hernandez. In the off-season, however, Lewandowski’s arrival and Fati’s return to fitness have pushed Depay down from a relevant role.
Depay has so far not featured in Xavi’s plans despite his impressive campaign for the Netherlands at Qatar 2022. It will be interesting to see Depay’s role if he does play for Atletico Madrid.
