Nagelsmann top contender to replace Mourinho at Tottenham

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

While fans across the world were shocked by the announcement of the European Super League, there were other developments in North London. Tottenham Hotspur sacked their manager Jose Mourinho from his current role. Ryan Mason is now acting as interim manager.

Tottenham will be on the lookout for a new manager, with RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann touted as the ideal replacement.

During his time, Jose Mourinho has been a divisive character at the club. His appointment was met with mixed reaction. Many considered the move a step backward from the progress Spurs made under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Inevitable happened

Jose Mourinho has been one of the influential managers of his time. He has won the Premier League thrice, all with Chelsea, during his two stints with them. Even during his time at Manchester United, the Portuguese tactician was able to secure the Europa League.

He started his time at Tottenham decently, finishing the club sixth in the previous season. The start of the season was promising. The club even topped the Premier League table for a brief period of time. They were having a good run in FA Cup and Europa League and reached the finals of the League cup.

But things soon derailed as they were knocked out of FA Cup and Europa League. The Europa league defeat was more devastating as they lost 3-2 in aggregate to Dinamo Zagreb. They lead the first leg 2-0.

The pressure kept mounting on the manager as the club started losing more games in the League as well. Tottenham have lost more points in the Premier League from a winning position than anyone else. He also had a bad relationship with many players. All this has lead Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy to sack his manager.

JULIAN NAGELSMANN THE IDEAL REPLACEMENT FOR TOTTENHAM

Nagelsmann in his brief career has garnered attention for all the right reasons. The young German made his name when he started managing 1899 Hoffenheim at the age of 28, becoming the youngest ever manager in Bundesliga.

He drove the team from the relegation battle and lead them to UEFA Champions League, the first time in the club’s history. Nagelsmann was soon appointed as the manager of RB Leipzig where he is contracted till 2023.

The German is known for his unorthodox positional play as well as his ability to nurture young talents. At just 33, he is able to understand the players more and has become one of the best tacticians out there. Dubbed as “Baby Mourinho”.

However, getting Nagelsmann will not be an easy task for Tottenham. He is currently under contract at RB Leipzig and has stated that he wants to honor the agreement.

WHO ARE THE ALTERNATIVES

Tottenham are also eyeing other options in case they are not able to land their main target. The managers under the radar are the Italian duo of Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri.

Sarri is a former Chelsea and Juventus manager and has won the Europa League with the Blues and the league title with Juve. However, he was shown the door at both Chelsea and Juventus within a single season. His lack of willingness to change or adapt his Sarri-ball style of game was said to be a reason for his removal.

Allegri on the other hand was a serial winner, having won multiple trophies with AC Milan and then Juventus. He transformed the Juventus side into the dominant side of Italy by winning 4 consecutive domestic doubles. Though the Italian has not been on a job for the last 2 years, he is still looked upon as an excellent option.

For Tottenham replacing Mourinho will not be as easy as they hope to. In agreeing to join one of the founder clubs of the Super League like Tottenham, the new manager would be accepting the new format and will surely face the wrath of the fans.
