Roma want out-of-contract Chelsea forward in summer

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Roma director Thiago Pinto reportedly held talks with the representatives of the Chelsea forward Oliver Giroud over a summer move.

The 34-year-old French forward scored 11 times in 24 appearances for the Blues during the 2020-21 campaign. However, he could not stamp himself as a first-team player. The most significant performance came in the Champions League group stage game away to Sevilla where he scored 4 goals in a single game.

The Frenchman’s existing deal at Stamford Bridge is due to expire at the end of this season. There’s no news over a possible contract extension with the Blues. So, the World Cup winner is eligible to hold discussions with foreign teams over a potential move.

Roma to replace Dzeko with Giroud

Chelsea bought the forward from Arsenal for €17 million in January 2018. Since joining the Blues Giroud scored 39 times and registered 14 assists in 112 appearances. The former Montpellier forward was previously linked with a move away to Inter Milan

Giroud has appeared for Les Bleus 107 times and has scored 44 goals. He is now 2nd on the list of all-time leading goalscorer for France. Only Thiery Henry is ahead of him with 51 goals.

35-year-old Bosnian Edin Dzeko is the current first-team forward for Roma. Dzeko was previously heavily linked with a move away from the Giallorossi last summer but the deal collapsed in the end. This season Dzeko left out of the team for disciplinary issues as well.

This unwanted situation with their club captain forced Roma to look away for a new striker. Giroud will be a great addition for Paulo Fonseca’s side and Serie A will be a perfect destination for Giroud as well.
