Xavi Hernandez has encouraged Barcelona to be ‘brave’. And ‘have personality’ in order to defeat Real Madrid in El Clasico on Thursday.
Barcelona will meet archrival Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final at Santiago Bernabeu. Both clubs are in uneven form.
Los Blancos followed up an amazing 5-2 triumph over Liverpool with a drab 1-1 draw with ten-man Atletico Madrid over the weekend, while Barcelona halted an eight-game winning streak in La Liga with a shock loss to Almeria on Sunday.
Xavi outlined to the press ahead of El Clasico what his squad needs to do to overcome European champions Real Madrid.
“We need to work together more than ever,” he remarked.
“Since they have fantastic transition players like [Federico] Valverde and Vinicius [Junior], we must be courageous, have personality, and minimise loss of possession. We must attempt to keep it under control.”
The Barcelona boss was also adamant that Real Madrid should be regarded the favourites for the semi-final match.
“My point is that Madrid has won both the league and the Champions League,” he said. “We beat them in the Super Cup, but this is Madrid.” To be honest, I believe Madrid is the favourite. Yet I also feel we have the potential to harm them. “I see a fairly equal tie.”
